ACTIVE 20-30 CLUB ASKS COMMUNITY TO JOIN THEM IN DOING “JUST ONE THING” FOR LOCAL CARSON VALLEY SHELTER

MINDEN, NV. (November, 5 2009) – The Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club is sponsoring a Daily Needs Drive for the Family Support Council of Douglas County as a part of the Purple Ribbon Coalition’s “Just One Thing” campaign. The Daily Needs Drive will run for two weeks, starting Monday, November 9 through Friday, November 20, 2009.

The Daily Needs Drive is designed to collect items for the Family Support Council and to build up an inventory of those articles that frequently need to be replenished due to wear and tear or loss. Needs range from twin sheet sets and bath towels, to cleaning and paper products, to personal items, such as shampoo and hairspray. A full list of Family Support Council Shelter Needs is listed on the Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 website: www.sierranv2030.org.

“As we start into the Holiday Season, many of us would like to contribute to those less fortunate,” said Jennifer Motti, President, Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club. “The ‘Just One Thing’ Daily Needs Drive enables us to come together as a community, to do one small, simple thing, but to make a powerful difference for people that really need it.”

“Family violence affects individuals the whole year through,” said Kristie M. Traver, Executive Director, Family Support Council. “The holidays are a time when we typically think of family, but unfortunately families in the shelter too often go without.”

Members of the community who would like to contribute to the “Just One Thing” Daily Needs Drive may do so by visiting the website to sponsor a portion of these items. You may pledge your donation online at www.sierrav2030.org or needed items may be dropped off at collection boxes at one of the following businesses (tax receipt is available):

GE Energy, 1631 Bently Pkwy So, Minden, NV 89423

BodyWise Physical Therapy and Fitness, 1667 Lucerne St, Minden, NV 89423

Re/Max Realty Affiliates, 1320 US Highway 395 N, Gardnerville 89410

The Family Support Council envisions and works towards ending family violence in our community through providing assistance to victims and preventing violence in family relationships. The Council works towards this mission by offering a 24-hour domestic violence/sexual assault crisis line; emergency shelter; court advocacy; support groups; parenting education classes; community education and outreach; and information and referral services. The Active 20-30 Club is an international, non-profit organization comprised of local clubs that raises funds for the special needs children in our local community. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in the Carson Valley in 2009, the Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club annually donates thousands of dollars in support of local charities and children's groups, including Kids and Horses, Tahoe Youth and Family Services, Family Support Council, Boys and Girls Club, and Austin’s House. Childrens Shopping Spree!

I want to send out a BIG THANKS to all of you for your help in making our 5th Annual Children's Shopping Spree a success. In this tough economic time, we were able to scrape funds together from friends, family, and businesses to put smiles on the faces of 66 kids in Douglas County.

Lauren was on the ball as co-chair was able to help secure the donation of breakfast from McDonald's and haircuts with Brooke's help.

I didn't take a child shopping this year, which is a very rewarding experience. However, I did get to witness the joy pouring from the kids as they walked out with bags full of new clothes. I want to share a few comments I got from parents/guardians:

"My son and three grand-daughters live with me and we barely get by on my disability income. This is the only time my girls get new clothes every year. Thank you!"
-- Grandmother of three

"I don't get to do many fun things anymore. I spend almost all my time at the teen drop-in center (Tahoe Youth & Family in the Ranchos). Thank you so much! I can't believe I get a haircut too!!"
-- 14 year old teen girl

"Our home burned down last year a couple days before your event and we couldn't come. Your club donated bags of clothes and things for our new house. This year we were able to come. Thank you so much! We still aren't back on our feet, but this really is a blessing!!"
-- Mom of three young kids

"I start my Senior year in a couple weeks. I'm so glad I have new clothes!"
-- Teen from Austin's House

And there's always one that brings tears to my eyes....

"I haven't seen (my son) smile in so long. He walked into McDonald's grinning from ear to ear! I was so happy, I love him and want him to be happy. Thank you for this. Thank you for helping my son smile again."
